Hand painted in gouache on genuine Egyptian papyrus, this Orientalist souk scene gathers the noise and colour of a North African marketplace into a single quiet sheet. Merchants lean over their stalls, figures in flowing robes drift through the crowd, and afternoon light falls in warm ochre, terracotta and burnt sienna across the woven fibres.

The Craft

The papyrus itself is made the old way, strips of the reed's inner pith laid in cross-hatched layers, pressed and dried until the surface carries that unmistakable ribbed grain. You can feel it under a fingertip. The gouache was applied by hand with fine brushwork, so the texture of the sheet shows through the pigment and gives every figure a depth no print could imitate. The deckled edge has been left intact and matted, as these works were traditionally presented.

Living With It

Painted in 1985 by an Egyptian artisan, this is the kind of piece travellers carried home from Cairo and Luxor, and it ages beautifully, deepening to a honeyed tone. Already framed and ready to hang, it reads as serious art above a console or in a hallway, and its gold, umber and clay tones sit naturally alongside timber, leather and antique brass.
