Pair Vintage Balinese Dancer Paintings K. Pica Batuan
A Pair of Balinese Temple Dancers
Captured mid-gesture, two temple dancers rise from fields of fine, layered detail, their fingers curled and eyes alert in the poised stillness of sacred Balinese dance. Painted by hand in the 1950s and signed K. Pica, these original works carry the hallmarks of the Batuan School, the village tradition celebrated for its densely worked compositions, patient fine-line ink work and deep, earthy tonality.
The Batuan Tradition
In the post-war years, Batuan artists filled every part of the canvas with movement and meaning, drawing on temple ritual, dance and the island's spiritual life. Here, the dancers' ornate costumes and headdresses are drawn with a devotion that rewards close looking, each fold and flourish built up stroke by stroke on canvas. As handmade originals, each piece is truly one of a kind.
For the Collector
Presented framed and in very good vintage condition, the pair works beautifully side by side, flanking a doorway, console or bed, bringing quiet ceremony and a sense of place to any room. A rare chance to acquire matched mid-century works from one of Bali's most distinctive painting traditions.
