Monumental Chinese Blue & White Palace Floor Vase 140cm
A Masterwork Scroll, Rendered in Porcelain
Standing an imposing 140 centimetres, this monumental Jingdezhen palace vase carries one of the great narrative paintings of Chinese art around its body: Along the River During the Qingming Festival (清明上河圖), Zhang Zeduan's Northern Song panorama of life on the waterways of Bianjing. Bridges arch over crowded water, merchants haggle at their stalls, boatmen lean into their poles, and the city unfolds in a continuous procession that rewards walking slowly around the piece.
The form is a classic baluster, rising from a narrow foot through a generous shoulder to a flared trumpet neck, the silhouette long favoured for the reception halls and temple interiors where scale mattered. Painted entirely by hand in cobalt underglaze beneath a clear high-gloss finish, the blues shift from near-black in the outlines to washed sky tones across the water, with all the fine irregularities of brushwork that no transfer print can imitate.
Provenance and Craft
Made in Jingdezhen, the porcelain capital of China, in the 1980s and finished with a studio workshop seal mark. It is a licensed reproduction of the historic scene, studio crafted and handmade rather than mass produced, and at 35 kilograms it has the honest heft of properly potted porcelain.
Living With It
In an entrance hall, flanking a fireplace or set against a plain wall beneath a stairwell, a vase of this size stops being ornament and becomes architecture. Left empty it reads as sculpture. Filled with tall magnolia branches, pampas or cherry blossom it turns theatrical. The blue and white palette sits as easily in a pared-back contemporary room as it does among antique timber and brass.
